KARVA CHAUTH

Image ID: 3737969

Caption : Women showing their hands after applying henna (mehendi) on the eve of "Karva Chauth" near Hanuman Mandir at Connaught Place in New Delhi on October 30, 2004. Karva chauth is an austere fast observed by married women in the Indo-Gangetic plains for their husbands' long life and well-being. The women must fast from dawn to dusk, without even having a sip of water. They break the fast only after they have sighted the full moon through a sieve and offered it water through a karva (a claypot with a spout). At the time they are all dressed in bridal finery whatever their age. Photo: Shiv Kumar Pushpakar
