Teer a form of archery, is very popular and people bet their money on how many arrows the archers can shoot into a target. This ancient sport of archery has now been allowed to involve legalized betting. Meghalaya has over 5,000 teer bookies, excluding those that operate along the border with Assam. Shillong alone has about 600 counters where people can place bets. Meghalaya government has increased the betting tax on this legalised form of gambling from 40 to 50 per cent, giving rise to the profit that finds its way into the government's coffers. Last year government earned 45 lakhs and every year it is increasing. Teer is the only government sanctioned gambling in Meghalaya state.
